Italian authorities have revoked environmental licenses for a proposed cruise port in Fiumicino, near Rome, following a ruling by the Regional Administrative Court (TAR) of Lazio. The project, backed by the Royal Caribbean Group, aimed to construct a cruise port, marina, and commercial areas near Rome Fiumicino Airport, potentially accommodating over a million cruise passengers annually. The court's decision halts the initiative, which had previously received approval from Italy's Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Culture, due to procedural errors in obtaining the licenses. Local associations had appealed against the project, which was initially presented as a marina. Currently,
cruise ships dock at the Port of Civitavecchia, about an hour from Rome, which served over 3.5 million passengers in 2025.
